Chopper - Springtime

Chopper's shock-pop blindsided me a little. At first, I was unsure about Springtime, the opening was fine but a little uneventful, but then the track exploded with unexpected vigour and I was won over. Musically it is sort of funky, sort of disco but then has rave and industrial barbs which really get under your skin. The accompanying video is lo-fi chic, too.

"The song was made during winter in the pandemic, and illuminates the feeling of isolation and longing we’ve all gotten to know so well during those years. Dancing on a thin line between comedy and tragedy - bittersweet and romantic, ugly and possessive.

Based in Copenhagen (Denmark), Chopper is a dark, danceable and playful solo-project by Jonatan K. Magnussen, feeding on anything from eurodance to glam rock, harsh industrial to disco. Imagine a carnival from hell, a fun, haunting and amusing little nightmare, the sound of untamed youth and the longing for love; all somehow elegantly yet forcefully contrasting the bleakest personal observations. With great charm, diversity and somewhat diabolic undertones, Chopper demands to be included among the unholy (and unwritten) canon of weird, haunting, homeless, lost pop figures of the past and present. Chopper lives well and free in a strange but captivating world. Long live the wicked!”

Taken from the forthcoming album “Shock Pop Vol. I”, this is a worthy introduction to someone taking risks and pushing genre boundaries just a little further than most. Look out for more from Chopper soon.
