I quite fancied something a little different to the noisy, challenging material I usually share and Donzii's Penetrate hits the spot. It is a fun, casual groove with a distinctly funky bass and affable vocal from Jenna Balfe. Jenna and musician Dennis Fuller formed the band in 2015 and named themselves after an Italian speedboat company. Why not! They say that "Their post-punk vision is a unity of go-hard industrial bangers, darkly ambient balladry, and new takes on the funk traditions of No Wave."
As Jenna explains “A lot of my inspiration comes from wanting people to think more deeply about being able to exist in a way that is more joyful,” she says. “Not in a Live Love Laugh kinda way, but in a way that encompasses the material grossness of this chaotic life cycle with a little chuckle beneath your breath. Like watching sweet little pink flowers grow atop a pile of decaying bones and compost.”
The video (directed by Trulee Hall) is amusing, it is all very messy and somehow comes across like a twisted, after-hours episode of Wacaday where Timmy Mallett meets The Creatures in a sub-erotic, slime-fest. I feel sorry for who ever had to clean the set afterwards!
You can find the track on their recently released Penetrate EP.
