Erika Sirola - There Was a Boy

Finnish-Canadian artist Erika Sirola has a new single out called There Was a Boy. The recording is an oddly constructed song with a definite spiral of experimentation beneath the more conventional pop structure. Interestingly, the original inspiration for the song was Nat King Cole's original 'Nature Boy' but Erika has flipped the concept by asking ‘what if it all goes wrong?’ For the track, there's an obvious Laurie Anderson feel to the vocal layering, but the spiky electronics twitch and cascade through the sheen with a more contemporary slant.

As Erika explains "I wanted the chorus to sound like an alarm, like an intruder. The lyrics are written from the perspective of a personified mask, any of the many we wear. Perhaps it’s your ‘armour’ trying to take full control. Or like dancing with a temptress, seducing us to try on different personas in the quest for self actualisation".

Give it a whirl.
