Holding Hour - Come Undone

Formed in 2021, Iowa-based duo Holding Hour are Marissa Kephart (lead singer and guitarist) and Scott Yoshimura (producer, engineer and multi-instrumentalist). Their latest release, Come Undone, is a track which would not have been out of place on one of my mixtapes from the heyday of indie back in the 90s. The rattling drums, guiding guitar and thoughtful vocal delivery simply take you along on that journey, making you companions together. Much like the best tracks of the time, there is a sense of the sharing of personal details in the lyrics. For example "Scratched Cds, fake leather seat, your hand on my knee, 'your's was all I'd want to be" hints at an emotional awakening, before "Say something sweet to me, I wanna hear my name inside your mouth, before you chew and spit it out, you never hurt me loud, it was in the quiet where we drowned" twists the knife and turns the sentiment towards a feeling of a relationship collapsed. Come Undone is an excellently crafted song, providing a strong level of emotional engagement. A highly recommended release.
