Signal-23’s ‘Torchrite’ is a short and simple electronic piece, clocking in at less than two and a half minutes, but that doesn’t detract from the enjoyment. The synth sounds are spot on, with a Polygon Window sort of execution that gives the track a wonderfully precise, retro-electronic character. There’s a satisfying restraint to the arrangement, allowing the textures and tones to carry the weight without unnecessary embellishment.
It’s a neat distillation of Signal-23’s hardware-driven approach, where atmosphere and sound design matter as much as melody. The retro-futurist artwork complements the music perfectly, too - somewhere between Art Deco elegance and Cubist geometry, it feels like the visual counterpart to the band’s seemingly analogue-meets-future aesthetic. A pleasingly concise instrumental without an ounce of flab.
