I’ve heard plenty of wrecking balls in my time, but Guteren’s is definitely swinging at the walls of sound on this one. Alex Goodman’s solo project takes Miley Cyrus’s pop tearjerker and gives it a post-hardcore battering, turning the desperation up to eleven.
With emo vulnerability, explosive heaviness and dramatic muscle; just as Guteren wanted, this lands like a 3am doorstep meltdown. As trashed-up cover versions go, he really blows the roof off and brings the house down. However, one thing that really disturbs me about the release is the angle of the runner mat on the artwork. I just feel the need to straighten it.
